WHEAT PUTTU / WHEAT STEAMED CAKE/ GOTHAMBU PUTTU

Wheat / Gothambu puttu (wheat steamed cake), is a healthy breakfast.  Kerala is famous for ‘puttu’. Various varieties are available like rice puttu, wheat puttu, ragi puttu, maize / cholam puttu etc…

Today, we are going to prepare wheat (Gothambu) puttu (steamed cake).  As wheat is very helpful for healthy diet, add a recipe to your breakfast menu – wheat puttu. In wheat puttu, it’s prepare with steam, so it will be much more healthy.

Ingredients:

Wheat flour (gothambu powder) ----------- 2 cups

Grated coconut --------------------------------1/2 to 1 cup

Salt ---------------------------------------------- to taste

Water -------------------------------------------as needed

Preparation:

1.     Take wheat flour in a vessel and add salt into it

2.     Sprinkle water to the powder, and mix well with fingers (Don’t pour more water at a time, as wheat will become dough very easily) till it become wet enough for steaming

3.     The wet powder may have small lumps, so in order to remove the same, put the flour in a mixi and pulse it just for a second

4.     Heat the steamer with water

5.     By the time, in a puttu maker (puttu kutti), after put a small disc with holes (chillu), add 2 teaspoon grated coconut, then prepared flour till half part, then again add 2 teaspoon coconut, then prepared flour, and at the end also add 2 teaspoon coconut, then close the lid and place it in the steamer to cook well

6.     After 3-5 minutes, steam start come out through the puttu maker’s lid holes

7.     Cook for 10-15 minutes totally (until the flour inside is cook well to eat)

8.     Turn off the stove and take the puttu maker from the steamer

9.     Then take out the puttu / steamed cake

10.                        Now the wheat puttu / gothambu puttu / wheat steamed cake is ready to serve

 

This can be served with banana, kadala curry (chick peas curry), fish curry, chicken curry etc… But I like the plain puttu, that too yummy with coconut added. If you like the taste of coconut well, mix half of the coconut with the flour too....That will add the taste of the puttu....:-)

Wheat puttu is a common breakfast in my home, because it’s very easy to prepare than chappathi, or poori or adai, and healthy too…. J Everyone in my family likes wheat puttu more than rice puttuJ
